Longley Concrete install stadia seating at Herne Hill Velodrome

Precast concrete flooring specialist Longley Concrete has installed terraced concrete stadia seating and staircases at the iconic Herne Hill Velodrome.

Longley Concrete manufacture its stadia and concrete stairs at its Northern Ireland plant. The company has two other manufacturing bases; in West Yorkshire and London, and has the capacity to produce enough precast concrete for over 28,000 homes.

Herne Hill Velodrome is an iconic open-air cycle track in South East London. The track is 450 meters long with the steepest part of the banking being 30 degrees. The Veledrome’s future was uncertain in the early 2000s following a dispute with the landlord. A campaign to support the Velodrome was supported by local celebrities such as James Nesbitt and Jo Brand as well as cycling stars Sir Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton and Ben Swift.

Longley Concrete’s Managing Director Michael Longley commented “It’s not often we get the opportunity to work on a project that is so steeped in history and heritage. The Velodrome was built in 1891 and we were pleased to be able to provide the precast concrete stadia and stairs for the next stage of its success. The outdoor stadia seating will provide a viewing platform for cycling enthusiasts visiting the velodrome.”

Originally built in 1891, it is the only remaining venue still in operation from the 1948 Olympic Games with a rich and long history. It is run by cyclists, for cyclists of all ages and abilities, competitive and non-competitive. The track has been used by many British cycling stars including Olympic gold medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins, former World Champion Tony Doyle and Corrine Hall.

Longley Concrete Ltd is a family run, privately owned business founded by Charles Longley in 1947 as a local block manufacturer. The company has successfully expanded over the years and now offers a diverse range of precast concrete products, including Beam and Block, Hollowcore and Insulated Flooring Systems. In addition the company also manufactures and installs precast concrete Lift Shafts, Staircases, Stadia and Landings.
