Value of construction apprentices

Despite newly-released figures showing that the construction sector regained some of its buoyancy last month, the industry is still facing its fair share of challenges. As well as looking to improve both productivity and technology, for instance, the government and business owners are seeking to minimise the skills gap.

This has been mooted for a number of years, but particularly came to light last year after City & Guilds carried out a study which found that 87% of the nation’s employers struggle to hire the people they need. Also, according to Construction News, 30% of British-born workers are now over the age of 50 and will be either nearing or already in retirement once the UK has formally left the EU.

With Longley Concrete placing a large emphasis on the importance of a qualified and experienced team, these are issues that everyone at the business feels extremely passionate about.

In addition to training current staff, like the company recently did with their Works Foreman/Training Officer Andrew Collomosse, another option is for organisations to forge close relationships with local schools and colleges to inspire young people to work for them, or at least in the same sector.

Apprenticeship Levy 2017

By introducing the Apprenticeship Levy in April 2017 and committing to creating three million new apprenticeships by 2020, Downing Street has certainly recognised the importance of a skilled workforce in the past couple of years. National Apprenticeship Week, which was held this past March, helped to raise awareness too.

As discussed earlier this year, with one apprentice working at their Dewsbury office, Longley Concrete very much see the value in apprenticeships and look forward to welcoming more in the not-too-distant future. The company has already recruited another apprentice, who will start in early September, as part of the estimating team.
